Gnarls Barkley is the Odd Couple l written by Sharcie J.
Gnarls Barkley knows how to effectively convey a message. On the cover of "Monitor Magazine" by Cat's Music, the duo strikes a pose as an indifferent bride and groom set. Cee-lo is the bride. He's in a white v-neck wedding dress, holding a cigarette and looks away from tuxedo(d) groom Danger Mouse, while the latter adjusts his sleeves or something. Though unexpected, the picture underscores the duo's latest album, "The Odd Couple."
The new album is just as unpredictable as St. Elsewhere, but with a slightly different feel. It's more adult in some ways with subdued warnings and shadowed commentary about the human condition. The single "Run" is a sort of 60s era throwback with major staccato throughout. My favorite, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul," features a contemplative Cee-Lo measuring life, death and dope. It's moving. "Charity Case" is Gnarls in its definition, with Old Negro Spiritual-like moans and grunts and nasty guitar licks and church organs, during which Cee-Lo asks and replies , "How are you?/Knock on wood/Well, I'm not doing so good." It's pretty cleaver.
However, " The Odd Couple" has bland moments like so many other albums. But then there is some fun in the mix. On "Whatever" Cee-lo, in his Baptist Church, Pastor's Anniversary or Men's Day voice whines "whatever" in what seems to be a mockery of some sort. But for the most part the guys want to contemplate and complain and they want us to listen for our own good.
My projection:
The Odd Couple may not gain the popularity and acclaim as St. Elsewhere, but it will enjoy a great deal of success. You will listen to this 20 years from now and say to yourself, "deep."
